Courgette One Ball F1 is an unusual round, bright yellow courgette that is a very easy to grow. It produces lots of uniform fruits on a compact plant from early July to October.
This compact variety does not sprawl all over the veg plot like some courgette plants and as the leaves are held upright on the plants finding the courgettes (before they grow to marrow proportions) is easier. It also does very well in a large pot filled with good quality organic matter if space in the veg plot is limited.
Yellow courgettes have a slightly sweeter flavour than green ones and usually need a little less cooking as they have a thinner skin but they make an attractive combination when mixed with other coloured courgettes on a dinner plate. There are so many ways to cook courgettes these days.
They can be griddled, used raw in thin slices in salad, used in chutneys or even added to cakes. And don't forget the flowers can be eaten too! Stuff them with cheese/herbs and deep-fry them - courgette flowers are a real treat as only freshly picked ones can be used so they are not found on supermarket shelves.
Growing courgettes at home is very rewarding as the plants are so productive and the fruits can be picked and used at their best whilst still firm and not bendy or with damaged outer skin like those handled on the supermarket shelves.

| How to Sow: |
Sow seeds vertically 1cm deep in a pot or tray of moist seed compost. Place in propagator/cover with glass, polythene bag until the seedlings appear (5-8 days). When the seedlings have 2/3 leaves transplant them into 2l pots and grow on for a few more weeks. Harden them off by putting outside during the day for 3/4 days. Plant out in mid - late May when the chance of frost has passed. Incorporate plenty of organic matter to feed the plant and help retain water. Keep well watered.Can also be grown in greenhouse soil provided it is very fertile and they are well watered or even in gro-bags or containers.

| How to Sow: |
Squashes are hungry feeders so to give them a good start outside, dig a hole 30cm square and fill with well rotted manure and cloche the area a week before direct sowing. Mound soil up and plant 2 seeds 2.5cm deep into the mound and cloche again until the seedlings grow. Remove the weaker seedling, and remove cloche a couple of weeks later. Seed will not germinate until the temperature is consistently above 13C. Keep well watered. Space plants 90cm apart, and 90cm apart in rows.
